Turin, 10 October (LaPresse) – Elia Viviani is retiring. ‘It's been 16 fantastic years, they flew by, but I enjoyed myself and achieved everything I wanted,’ wrote the cyclist and track rider in a post on Instagram. "Today I am announcing the end of my career as a professional cyclist! Thank you to everyone involved over the years." Born in Veneto in 1989, the rider won five stages in the Giro d'Italia (also winning the cyclamen jersey in the points classification in 2018), three in the Vuelta a España and one in the Tour de France. In one-day races, he won the Hamburg Classic three times and won the Italian road race title in 2018 and the European title in 2019. His results on the track are also noteworthy, in particular the Olympic gold medal in the omnium won in Rio 2016, to which he added bronze in the same event in Tokyo 2020 and silver in the Madison event in Paris 2024, paired with Simone Consonni. Viviani was also the Italian flag bearer at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
